-Past.-
Kiyo grew up in a well off Family, with his Japanese Mother and American Father. His Family was well respected in Japan and made a simple living as Middle class people--they weren't poor nor were they rich. They made a living off of selling fans, paper lanterns, candles, tea and fruit for many generations. Kiyo disliked Tea which was ironic. When they made a huge profit was during the summer and autumn where Matsuri (local festivals) were being held or during the rice harvest. And since they lived in Kyoto, Japan, the Matsuri were especially big.
During the Jidai Matsuri (held on October 22) Kiyo's family opened their shop and had Kiyo (he was eight or so) go out into the crowds offering peaches to sell to the local towns people and dressed him in a plain white kimono with a yellow obi. The young Kiyo managed to sell all of his peaches save for a few plus a few lanterns and fans. During that night a small boy ran from the crowd approached him, kissed him on his cheek and stole the last peach without paying for it. The perplexed Asian boy realized this and chased after said thief but had lost him. It was then when the local boys began to pick on Kiyo. They were chased off by the same boy that had stolen the peach from Kiyo beating the boys pretty badly and soon they fled the street leaving Kiyo and Tsubai alone. He inquired as to why he stole the peach and the other merely said because he was hungry and didn't have any money. Kiyo felt grateful toward the other boy, who revealed his name to Tsubai, and soon they became friends with one another. He then offered his new friend a job to work in the tea house with him and his family.
Kiyo's Father was murdered by a Samurai a year later on Kiyo's Ninth birthday by suspicion that his Father owed debts from gambling all over Japan and he never paid back the yen he owed when in truth he was killed just by the fact he was American. Kiyo grew distant with his family but he still acted the same way around Tsubai but kept the fact his Father was murdered from his friend.
When Kiyo was Nineteen a strange visitor from Tokyo came to Kyoto for the local Matsuri and went to Kiyo's shop (he inherited it after his Father died though shared ownership with his Mother), he got into a heated haggle with his Mother over the price of a well crafted wooden fan that was made of red silk and bamboo. Kiyo was in the back making candles for the Matsuri when he heard his Mother scream along with several crowds of people (luckily Tsubai wasn't there) who had gathered to watch the intense haggling. The man was standing with over his Mother's bloodied body. The crowd was gone by then as the man advanced upon the Seven teen year old. His eyes narrowed as a smirk appeared on his face. Kiyo remembers the words the man said to him as he forced him to the floor.
"You are my type, Little One."
Then the man tore at the layers of kimono that covered him. Kiyo became cold within a matter of minutes as the man continued to supposedly choke him. Kiyo became horrified as this continued for an hour and eventually his kimono was torn to shreds exposing his chest but nothing below his waist though the strange Japanese man often made attempts to slide his hand beneath the robes up his leg to his thigh but nothing more. Kiyo passed out well after twenty minutes and barely was able to regain consciousness until the man stopped. Hovering between unconsciousness the figure asked if Kiyo had anything left to live for, thinking of Tsubai he answered weakly yes and the figure merely laughed. He passed out then. He awoke in the back of the store to hear Tsubai calling for him.
Kiyo became horrified about the possibility of letting Tsubai find out what had happened to him and so fled from Kyoto Japan that night. He now resides in Wisconsin and owns his own tea shop. He began to take Guitar lessons a week after he opened his shop. It has been a few months now since he last saw Tsubai and since that horrible night in Kyoto.
