[Pop rocks and Coke]
Galen Hay had prepared a special meal that night. Not only had the weather chosen to accept his threat, and I quote, "YOU BETTER STAY NICE OR I AM GOING TO BEAT YOU WITH THINGS!" but the warm air around him was relatively bugless, and the breeze had suspended itself as to not blow over the candles that were anchored firmly into the sand. Because, that would definitely ruin Galen's night, and tonight it had to be perfect. If it wasn't, like I had said before, Galen would be beating things with sticks. Now why was tonight such a special night? Well, we'll just have to wait and see. Galen was slightly apprehensive about the evening he had planned, but hoped that the other that was to be sharing it with him would find it satisfactory. Of course all this didn't matter. It was one question that would define the entire evening, and in turn, Galen's life. If the answer was no, Galen would go into a brooding silence, the same kind of depressed state that he had found himself in after his parents divorce.
But hopefully this would not be the case, and the evening would be lovely and joyful, all that fun stuff. Galen had ran everything by with his parents, simply taking their opinions on the life changing question he was about to ask. They had agreed that he was very much younger than they had been, but also agreed that he should not take that to mean he should not ask. Of course, this was not the answer Galen was hoping for, in fact, he would've been quite a bit more sure of himself on this balmy August night, if his parents had given him complete thumbs up. But there was nothing to be done about the now, and so with a slightly nervous look on his face, he plopped down at the blanket, waiting apprehensively for his opposite to come, and change his life. Okay, so I've been really highlighting this whole, "his life is changing thing." That's because it was. And the worst, or best, was yet to come. It was all up to one girl.

Madison was extremely happy today. She had passed her road test two weeks ago and for the first time since doing so, her parents are given her permission to use the car - all by herself! She was practically floating on air as she hopped from the car, which was parked on the side of the road. Maddie's boyfriend, Galen, had told her that he had something special planned for them tonight. Butterflies fluttered around her stomach and Maddie walked into the woods in a daze. The trail was very worn and it was hard to get lost. Maddie followed along the dirt path, easily picking her way to the spot in which they had agreed upon to meet.
The path that Maddie had taken led quickly to the clearing. Maddie stopped a few feet away from the clearing and she could see Galen getting ready for their night. She smiled to herself and then ran her hands over the tight jeans that she wore. She looked down at her shirt, which was a plain white tank top with lace for the straps and on the top. She pulled it up a little, hiding her breasts just a little more. She then slipped off her flip-flops and proceeded into the clearing, be careful and quiet. Sneaking up behind Galen, Maddie stood on her toes and covered his eyes.
"Guess who?" she whispered in his ear. She was grinning to herself and then spun him around, pushing her lips onto his.

[When the storm comes your way]
Galen kissed her for a moment, then released, grinning and patting the soft blanket beside him. "Have a seat." The location the two currently resided in was quite a pretty one. Trees surrounded a sandy clearing, and the trickle of the nearby river was visible down a slight decline. Uneven roots littered the beach, and the canopy echoed with bird song, making the entire scene quite a pleasant one. Galen watched the river with dazed blue eyes. It winded in and out, its depth shadowy, but not unpleasant. Surely at this time of the year, it was warm enough. Maybe if the night went as planned, a quick dip would be in order. Galen smiled at the thought, noting the minnows that weaved their way through the lazy current. It was these days that made him love Wisconsin, its sprawling wheat fields, and its winding rivers. Everywhere you turned, a different scene greeted you.
After this slight digression, due to observation of the scenery, Galen turned back to Maddie, smiling easily. Tonight he was clad in a green button up shirt, that made the flecks of green that littered his eyes stand out. His broad shouldered frame seemed even broader still, and the shirt was tucked into a pair of khakis, secured by a belt around his waste. He had abandoned his usual baseball hat, and his hair was as messy and unkempt as ever. It laid in slight ruffles, hanging to beneath his earlobe. Actually, this was very fancy attire for Galen, who hardly took the time to dress up. More likely to wear a stained T-shirt than anything, the change in clothing was slightly shocking on him. His eyes glittered, a mysterious air hanging about him. It was obvious he was planning something. Exactly what, he was none to sure, and it really depended on Maddie's answer. But enough about that. There are more important things than the clothing on one's back, like the feelings of slight insecurity that currently plagued his head.
Was he acting too quickly? Was there a potential that she would say no, and all of the things that he had realized he felt for her would go down the drain? Of course this was all a possibility, and this frightened him. Just the thought that perhaps she would be scared off. The two were so young. Galen was nearing his nineteenth birthday, which was not so bad, but Maddie was a mere seventeen. There was so much more she could do, needed to do, before settling down. But despite all of these sudden thoughts of negativity, Galen was relatively sure of one thing. Deep down, he knew he loved Maddie. Nothing, whether she said yes or no, could change that feeling of affection, that he hoped she would return.

Maddie crawled over Galen purposely and sat beside him, her chocolate eyes gazing out at the peaceful river. The water was murky and not pretty, but scenery that surrounded the river made it look all the more beautiful. Maddie sighed, taking in all of the beauty that had formed throughout the years. It was so nice here in the woods; everything was so peaceful. All of Maddie's worries went away as she gazed over Mother Nature's creations. Sitting here with Galen, Maddie was at ease and hope filled in her body. So far, with Galen in her life, Maddie had stopped her heavy drinking and harsh cutting. She still drank sometimes, when Galen wasn't around - which was soldem -and she never told him about it. As for her cutting... it had stopped a whole lot, but you couldn't love depression away. Could you? Was she not trying hard enough?
The cuts that she made were small and carefully hidden, tucked away in a box, swept under the rug... whatever you wanted to say. They were just tiny incisions that let out the right amount of blood and pain to calm Maddie down when she needed it. In a way, she felt as if she were cheating at Galen by doing this. But, he probably had secrets of his own, right? Wrong. Galen was perfect. At least to Maddie, which is why her heart ached when she was away from him for too long.
Glancing over at Galen, Maddie smiled to herself. He was all hers. This great guy was hers. No one could touch him. Well, they could, but then Maddie would beat their ass. The Boy was hers and she was his; nothing could change that.
"It's beautiful," Maddie said in a soft voice, leaning on Galen. She gripped his arm with her hands and rested her head on his shoulder. She hoped that the serenity and peace of the evening would last. Maybe, if they were caught up in it enough, they would make their love (even though they already had done so before). The stillness of the forest echoed all around them, for once on their side... for once working with them.

[Would you go with me?]
Galen smiled, but beneath the smile was a bundle of nerves. He grimaced inwardly at how squeaky his voice came out when he finally spoke. "Okay Maddie, so why don't you get comfortable, and why don't we start the bruschetta, because I don't know if I can get this out. His voice was steadily higher pitched until he sounded like a toddler getting ready to throw a tantrum. He took one deep breath, and uncovered the plate that held the bread with tomatoes and mozzarella piled on top. Taking an enormous bite out of one, he glanced back at her, eyes darting around her face. "Oh yes, and I made these myself, I hope you like them," he said, forcing himself to speak slower as to not take on the 'toddler having a tantrum' tone. Galen swallowed the huge lump in his throat, his mind reeling and thoughts digesting in his skull. Suddenly he locked his own eyes to her chocolate ones. "Maddiewillyoumarryme?" The words came out jumbled, and Galen wasn't quite sure if he had even put them in the correct order.
He took another forced breath, and bolted down more mozzarella, before posing his question again. This time, he lifted the velvet box that he had been fingering so lately out of the pocket of his khakis. He knelt on one knee, figuring he may as well do the entire thing right. "Madison Elle Townsend; Will you marry me?" He popped open the clasp, and the diamond ring glittered on its velvety pillow.

Maddie, after being so calm, began to feel Galen's nerves and anxiety. She didn't like the feeling and moved slightly away from Galen, hoping to distance herself from the energy that Galen was giving off. He was speaking in an odd, which was too high. This wasn't her Galen. This was someone. But, he seemed to calm down a little bit when he grabbed the bruschetta. Maddie tucked a piece of her curly, brown hair behind her ear and watched Galen take a bit of the food and chew it throughly.
"Hmm," she said, smiling at him. "Bruschetta is the shit. Next to pesto sauce and biscotti." Leaning toward Galen, Maddie took a bite of his own bruschetta and then proceeded to move closer to him, until their lips were touching. It was a quick kiss and then Maddie pulled away, she heard Galen mumble something. Not catching it, Maddie gave him a quizzical look, tilting her head to the side a bit, waiting for him to speak again.
What happened next was completely unbelieveable. Maddie's breath caught in her throat and the birds even stopped chirping. She could hear the river roaring in her ears; had it been that loud before? What little insects were flying about before now vanished and it was just Maddie & Galen... the man whom had changed Maddie's life around. She swallowed the food in her mouth and stared at Galen, her mouth now hanging open.
"Oh my gosh," she whispered, her body pushing all of her oxygen out. She felt dizzy and hot. "Oh... my God...!" Maddie glanced down at the box in Galen's hand and then looked up at him, her eyes locking with his. This is what it felt like. This is what love was like. Breathing seemed to come unnaturally to Maddie at this point, but she soon found after - after choking on her own saliva. "Yes, Galen," she said strongly. "I will marry you." Maddie then pounced on him, knocking him on his back, her lips brushing up against his.

[A couple of nights I don't regret] When Galen awoke the next morning, his head pounded. The night before had been a blur, but he remembered something about him proposing to Maddie and then... the sudden realization hit him with the weight of a thousand bricks. In a deep slumber beside him was Madison Townsend. How peaceful she looked there, chocolate curls surrounded her pale face. But a much deeper realization then made Galen worry. He yanked the covers up to his chin, and leaned back once more, biting his lip. The two were engaged now. Was it really something to be so embarrassed about? He sighed, steadying himself, and tried to lift his aching limbs out of the bed. His head pounded and dizziness shot through his entire body. A hangover. And the fact was that Galen Hay had never experienced one, and never planned to. So what exactly had happened between the two. One thing was obvious, Galen thought, pulling on a T-shirt and a pair of khakis. Something had. Also, how would he explain to his parents what had happened? Ahggg, this was so inconvenient. With Maddie going to school and- SHUT UP GALEN!, he yelled to himself, and sunk down into a chair nearby. Just deal with it.After having this determined argument with his own head, he turned to the breakfast options nearby. Once again, they'd found themselves in his RV, but there was a good chance his parents had as horrid a hangover as he did. He stumbled down the steps, squinting slightly at the scene that met his eyes. The sun was bright, and oddly hot. Glinting stuff didn't exactly register in Galen's mi-OH a swimming pool. He giggled feebly, and made his wobbly way back to the RV. Making his way to the bathroom, he splashed water on his face. It seemed to clear his vision slightly, and so he headed back to the kitchen area with breakfast on the mind. Wouldn't it seem fitting to make Maddie a nice breakfast, because there wasn't really a way to apologize. I mean, there isn't really a "Sorry, we just had drunk sex," Hallmark card. So Galen busied himself frying eggs, and wondered when Maddie was to wake up, and wonder what the hell she had done. But then, he reminded himself sensibly, she'd probably experienced it quite a lot before. Once again the whole my-fiance-is-a-slut theory. Dammit.

You had some of the best times you'll never remember with me: Alcohol, alcohol The smell of eggs and bacon drifted up Maddie's nose and was what initially woke her. When her brown eyes looked around the room - a bedroom - the sun hit them and Maddie was forced to quickly close her eyes. She lifted her slim arm to her forehead and winced. God, how she had a headache! Maddie sat up and leaned forward, wanting to throw up. Her curls jumped to the side of her face, hiding away her pain. She must be getting period. It was usually bad and made her sick. Leaning forward more, Maddie clentched her stomach and felt tears welling in her eyes. She bit her lower lip and fought the tears that threated her. Maddie was about to throw the sheets from her body when she realized something: she was naked. Completely naked.
"Oy my God!" she shrieked, but it only hurt her head. She wrapped the sheets around her body and looked around the room. Where was she? She'd never seen this room before.... Bits and pieces floated back to her; a bottle of vodka, empty. Her arms wrapped around Galen, sucking on his neck while he carried both of them up the steps in the RV. Galen above her and slowly entering her body.
Shaking her head, Maddie looked around. Where was Galen? The smell of the eggs soared up her nose again and she nodded to herself. Why was he making breakfast? She decided to get dressed right away. Where was she going to go, though? Home? Her parents would be on her case. She could lie, like she had been doing to them ever since she could talk. They always believed her. Anyway, they probably had a hangover, too. Maybe the three of them could crash over coffee and tacos (hangover food; anything else made Maddie sick & crazy!) and swap drunken sex stories.
"Holy shit," Maddie mumbled and swallowed hard. She let the sheet fall from her body and then she bent down to grab her black thong. She slipped it on and looked around for her jeans. While in the search, Maddie found her black Angel's bra and also snapped that one. She found her jeans at the bottom of the bed and she jumped into them.
But then it slipped into her mind. Maddie pulled the jeans on the rest of the way, not bothering to zipper them up or button them, and stared at the bed. She rushed to the side and sifted through everything on the bed. She even looked under the bed and all around it. Where was the plastic? Her breath caught in her throat and then Maddie ran from the room and into the kitchen, her curls bouncing.
"Galen!" she said in a panic. She saw him jump slightly. "Did we use a condom?" She stared hard at him, tempted to just run away right now. But, weren't they engaged? So, did they need to use protection? YES! Maddie was only seventeen...
Oh my gosh.

Galen started when he saw Maddie, half clothed, her face stricken. His voice caught in his throat, and he said nothing. The sound of eggs burning against the pan was horribly loud, as the two stood there, facing each other, Galen's face abashed, Maddie's panicked. He managed to shrug and mumble, "Mm... I dunno maybe." He knew this was not the answer she wished to hear, so he kept his blue eyes down, for once afraid of what was coming next. Why was he so tolerant when she was snapping? Why couldn't they just figure out what had happened, and get through it instead of playing the dreaded blame game? Galen sighed and took the faintly smoking pan off of the stove. "Eggs?" he asked feebly, tipping the slightly brownish substance onto a plate, and forcing it into her hands.
For once, there was absolutely nothing for Galen to say. Nothing bracingly supportive that would make the whole situation better. Unknowing of what to say, he sighed, and determinedly ate his eggs. "Have some juice," he said, forcing a cup into his hands, and struggling to keep his voice steady. Finally, he couldn't hold himself any longer. Collaspsing into a chair, he gazed up at her, eyes beseeching and slightly shameful. "Maddie I'm sorry. It's all my fault. I should've waited to propose and had better judgement and... I'm sorry. That's the point. If you want to break up the engagement, I'll understand. I just want you to know that this last summer with you have been the best... I mean; the best. So, just know you've given me some of the happiest times of my life, and I hope I've given you some as well."
Galen waited with doe eyes for her answer, dreading it slightly. The fact that Maddie didn't usually have to commit, made it all the worse.

It doesn't always turn out like I think it should But I do it anyway
Galen looked so scared, so frightened. He was avoiding her gaze and Maddie knew why. She forced herself to look away from him when he didn't answer right away. And when he did answer, Maddie glared at him and felt her heart race. It was thumping away so fast in her chest she thought that it was going to pop out. She folded her arms in front of her and narrowly stared at Galen.
"You don't know?" she snapped. "How can you not fucking know?" She was beginning to hate him. But, mostly, she was beginning to hate herself. She was a drunken slut... that's all she ever would be. She had lied to herself for years, not admitting her problem with alcohol. Galen had kept her sober all summer long... for the most part. They also hadn't had sex at all during the summer. They had fooled around a little bit, but Maddie hadn't given it her all. It seemed weird to actually want to be intimate with a men. Before, she had chosen to do it because it was what she knew. And then she had been forced to do it. And now... she was loving a man and wanting to be with him. It was just a new feeling and Maddie knew that she had to adjust.
She dropped her hands, revealing her flat, muscular stomach and her black bra once again. She ran a nervous hand through her hair and dropped her gaze, barely hearing Galen ask his question. When she looked at him, he had collasped into a chair and was now making a speech. Maddie shook her head after he was done speaking.
"No, honey, no," she said, staying where she was, her feet like cement. "It's not your fault... it's mine. I get carried away and then with alcohol, I can't think. Obviously." Her brown eyes registered with his and her heart went out to him. "I love you, Galen. I want to marry you. If you're second-guessing yourself - which it sounds like - I understand. I'm just a slut, you know that; that's all I'll ever be. The summer carried us away and we got caught up in it. It was great, babe, and I'll never forget it." She looked away from him and tears surfaced, brimming her eyes. "I understand if you think that things won't work." She cleared her throat and looked back at him, letting the tears roll down her face. She knew when a guy was breaking up with her; she had certainly experienced it enough. She forced a smile. "Just remember that I love you."
Turning around, Maddie folded her arms and walked toward the bedroom. When Maddie reached the room, she sniffed and looked for her tank top. She threw it on and took one last look around the room. She then walked from the room and stopped once again in the kitchen. But, she couldn't walk toward the door. She couldn't leave Galen.
"Galen," she choked, "I don't want to leave you. I love you." And then all of her salty tears came rushing forward at once.

[There she goes; there she goes again] Galen felt his own blue eyes brimming with tears. Um... Galen? Where's your manliness? But the fact was that Galen couldn't let Maddie leave his life. They were too meant to be together to pass up the chance that stood before them. Galen strode forward and wrapped his arms around her trembling shoulders, kissings her hair, her forehead, then her lips, staring into her eyes, and hugging her. "I love you too Maddie. Nothing you could ever say would change that." He cradled her in deeply tanned arms for a moment, completely silent. His mind was reeling, and he was unable to come to terms with the fact that the two would probably be having a baby. Just the thought of something that was really a reflection of the two of them. Maddie's brown hair? His blue eyes? Thoughts swam about his head, and even in a time like this, he couldn't help smiling. He held Maddie at an arms length, bending down so that his face was close to her own. "Maddie, about this whole baby thing. Who knows, we might get lucky and you might not be pregnant. And if you are... then we'll get through this. We can stick together and I know we can. We have to."The look of steely determination he now wore, was very similar to the expression he so often did. Yet there was a note of desperation in his last words that was unfarmiliar in his voice. Galen Hay was usually calm and collected, a gentle teenager that wasn't quick to pick fights. But now with this sudden responsibility launched onto him, his world was flipped. He still wanted to get married to Maddie, very much actually, but now there was a reason they had to get married, whether they wanted it or not. Sooner rather than later as well. They would be frowned upon from the entire family, if they released that Maddie was pregnant. After they were married, that was fine. Galen decided to voice this opinion, his tone urgent and hushed as if someone were listening through the open windows. "Maddie we need to have a wedding sooner rather than later. Nothing big, just a little event for a few people and family. Then it won't be so weird that you're pregnant... assuming you are," he added quickly, as if there was still a slight possibility that Maddie had escaped pregnancy.
